New gig announced for March 2012

I know I’ve been quiet recently but I’m pleased to announce that I have a gig booked for March 2012. It’s going to be a bit special as it’s going to be the launch gig for my new EP. I’m playing at the Betsey Trotwood in London on Saturday 10th March. Hope to see you all there!

New 'Chelsea Bikes' EP on its way!

Howdy,

I seem to always start these mailing list posts apologising for my lack of activity…I’m afraid this one is going to be no different…”I’m sorry!”

My excuse is that I’ve been busy recording. For the last few months I have been working on my new album ‘Starkweather’, it’s coming along nicely and I’ve got about half of it recorded and mixed. It’s more stripped back than the first album and it’s heavily influenced by story telling singer/songwriters. I expect to finish this later in the year and have it out (for free as always) for September time.

I’d have probably finished it earlier if I hadn’t got side tracked by the idea of recording an EP! In Hayze we had a track called ‘Chelsea Bikes’ (or the Monday Tuesday song as some know it as ;-)) it became a live favourite for the last year we were together but we’d never recorded it….so now I have!

It’s going to be released on an EP with 2 other tracks: ‘Charlie 58’ (from the new album) and ‘Nothing in your way’.

The EP will be available for free download from my website and official FM page. It will also be released on limited edition 7” vinyl via Oh Mercy! Records which will be available to buy from my website and Out of Time Records in Ipswich. The EP will also be distributed to all digital outlets including Spotify by the good people at Record Union.

The tracks are almost complete and will be mastered by Topfloor Music before I unleash them on you lot!

So there…see, I have been busy!

Album recording begun # week 1

So the first week of recording the new album has passed without incident - which is good! The ideas for the songs and the structure of the album have come to me quite quickly which is great but it does mean I’m feverishly writing notes, lyrics and instructions down at every opportunity. I’ve even got the album name and artwork pretty much nailed too which is extremely rare…I usually ponder such decisions as fonts and pictures for months (boring everyone around me in the process).

The album is going to be called ‘Starkweather’ and the songs (which have most of the lyrics and structure complete) are:

1. Ramsey County
2. Memory Lane
3. Friends of Starkweather Creek
4. Impressionist Painter
5. Charlie 58
6. Eastern Echo
7. Jupiter Sierra
8. The Red Tent Temple Movement
9. From St. Germain to Salvation Mountain
10. Midwest Symphony

The majority of these songs will be recorded on no more than 4 tracks (following the way Springsteen recorded Nebraska - I’ve become a bit of an anorak - sorry!). It’s going to be me and the acoustic guitar with some possible percussion and piano when appropriate. This in itself makes it a lot different to ‘Never before but maybe again’ which used samples, drums, bass, synths and multitudes of VST plug-ins.

While it will be just me doing the recording I will, as ever, be using my trusty mastering wizard Pete Maher to make the album sparkle and come to life. His opinions on my previous work have been very important to me and helped me decide which path to follow. He seems excited that I’m doing an ‘acoustic album’ so let’s hope it all comes good.

The first track recorded is ‘Charlie 58’ and I have put a version of the final mix up on the interweb for you all to hear. Please do give me feedback - it’s always nice to hear what you think.

First review of the album

The mag reviewed my album sampler…check it out here or read below for their kind words!

Like The Guess Who backed by a Beck-esque beat, Play Rewind Eject smash out some cool loose tones with tons of character.

‘What Do You Say?’ is pure class. It’s too cool for convention, but still mixes in some smoking retro guitars with a sparse trashy beat.

There’s something of Schizo Fun Addict in the keyboards layered behind the acoustic guitars in ‘You’re Like A…’. This is actually a brilliant song with a strong melodic thread.

This record is a combination of Loopy, Beck, Schizo Fun Addict and The Guess Who - and as strange a mix as that is, it sounds rather good.

3.5/5
